Polio--Then, Now, and Forever Part III article by Jennifer Lake Polio researcher Janine Roberts eerily calls the polio vaccine campaign the 'Manhattan Project of virology' in online excerpts of her book, Fear of the Invisible. (1). With justified reason the "race" for a vaccine, as it was characterized, became a consuming preoccupation of the bioweapons establishment, the larger auxiliary of the nuclear program which operated under the auspices of public health. The gamma globulin trials of 1951-52, directed by William McDowell Hammon, unfolded precisely within the research structure of the military, beginning at Provo Utah which sits intimately due east of the Dugway Proving grounds. Dugway was activated for biowarfare in 1942 when the Manhattan Project went official and served as the home of the Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Weapons School, signed into being by FDR. Said to be "inactivated" in 1946, a new era for Dugway was marked in June of 1951 with the declaration of the Korean War. The GAO (Government Accounting Office) said this regarding open-air tests at Dugway, "From 1951 through 1969, hundreds, perhaps thousands of open-air tests using bacteria and viruses that cause disease in humans, animals, and plants were conducted at Dugway...It is unknown how many people in the surrounding vicinity were also exposed to potentially harmful agents used in open-air tests at Dugway." Some accounting, eh? The Salt Lake Basin area was what you could call "double downwind" --fallout coming from both Dugway and the Nevada Test Site. Not least of the conveniences in Provo was the residential State Hospital, like other state institutions, a go-to resource for unwitting human subjects. Long after the gamma globulin (G.G.) trials expanded to Texas and Iowa/Nebraska, the situation was angrily summarized in 1955 in an article by Dr. Shelton, "The Crime at Houston",(2) wherein institutionalized children are noted as human testers for polio experiments. The practice, in fact, was the norm, and commented on by Dr. Gordon Meikeljohn in the army's history archive as "what we would consider unethical today". There are a couple of possibilities about the G.G. trials and the vaccines that followed. Near to 54,000 children were involved. They became a ready polio-specific G.G. Harvest, especially the wards of the state. It is also possible, since the known relationship of polio with "grippe" (influenza) that the disease had already been made an effective aerosol. Simon Flexner's conviction that polio was spread through the respiratory tract like the flu presents that possibility as hanging over the much earlier Great Influenza pandemic of 1918-19. The following decade, prairie dust sickened volunteers with the flu. Researchers of the 20s and 30s set about proving nasopharyngeal entry of polio as Flexner insisted on. Albert Sabin's conclusive discovery linking summer grippe to poliovirus in victims at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital in 1947 invigorates the weaponizing-of-airborne-polio theory. It is the simplest and best empirically documented cause of polio that comes from aerosolized chemicals, though it took decades for the evidence to amass, and is intended to mean an ingested gastro-intestinal accumulation. (3). By 1951, industrial chemicals were a known disease commodity and the spectrum of viral biologics was on its way to infinity. Although we know today that polio is a wide category of many diseases from mild psychological disorders to devastating and fatal paralysis, the prevailing thought of the "universal agent" as the source of disease as well as cure (the "magic bullet") is/was the primary driver of germ theory research and bioweaponry. In a truer scheme of biology based on polymorphism, pathogens recombine and mutate through transitional forms, similar to unstable molecules under stress. Only the secret conductors of the bioweapons tests were in-the-know about the aerosol agents released at Dugway and NTS. What is known is that newly formed microbes derived from irradiation studies were part of the open-air tests, not at Dugway but in the mock biowarfare tests on city streets and country towns. The pseudo-pathogens were advertised as harmless modified "yeasts", but everyone should know a basic of modern epidemiology --a pathogen is any microbe (yeast, fungi, bacteria, cell, virus, biochemical, etc.) out of its endemic host environment. So where does an artificial mutant call home? (...uh, anywhere it wants??..) The benefit of G.G. is in the naturally made antibodies of the living immune system to "whatever" is assaulting it at the time, time being its chief liability, but the vastly more expensive commercial limitations on G.G. were its greatest drawback and not to be overcome. It was raining fallout. Vaccines thought to provide lasting immunity were wanted and fast! There is little else to explain the cavalier appearance of pressure on the vaccine-producers into making a tangible and cheap product quickly. For our present and continuing ignorance, this eventuality is played out as a vicious competition between two contending medical scientists, Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin, but a multitude of practical physicians had been calling out for decades about the lack of understanding being made from polio experience. Simon Flexner had sufficiently locked up the research to exclude the evidence-based reporting by hands-on treatment, adding into this mix an "experimental" disease created with monkeys in 1917 (culled from dead children of 1916 New York), which is a case of manufacturing a pathogen to fit disease conditions. The continuing confusion about the process, mechanism, and etiology of polio was outpaced in the 1930s by a great PR campaign waged by Carl Byoir and Edward Bernays on behalf of FDR and his Wall St. law partner, Basil O'Connor (specializing in "oil" contracts). Polio "had become the victim of its own success" as David Oshinsky describes it in the book Polio, An American Story. (4). The paralytic form of polio had been blown out of proportion relative to other injurious disorders, described as a highly contagious scourge and proven to be the longshot winner of disease fundraising by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (NFIP). FDR's close friend, the Hollywood and radio star, Eddie Cantor, submitted the idea of the "March of Dimes", and with the help of MGM pictures and Loews theaters, movie houses started collecting a staple income for the NFIP. This enormous bonanza revolutionized the way of philanthropy and marketing but in the post-WWII era came with too many strings attached when the Hollywood set transferred its largesse into the "federated philanthropies" of the United Way. It was quick work for the March of Dimes PR specialists to reinvent the public funding endeavor and do it with panache so that "giving" at fashion shows and parties-for-a-purpose became something chic, but it was the foot-soldiering of volunteer mothers going door-to-door who carried the campaign. For all the hoopla and attention, the problem for the March of Dimes administration, and O'Connor in particular, was that they were no closer to curing the illness with a magic bullet. A Hero was conspicuously absent. One required to be made. Roger Revelle, popularizer of Global Warming and mentor to Al Gore Jr., said of Jonas Salk that he was "not too bright" and had been made a living legend by a force beyond his merits. Perhaps that was harsh of Revelle. Salk's personal ambitions were no less than universal in scope, which evolved as his utopian books and activities while he was the figurehead of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. Arranged for him in 1960, and paid for with 15 million in NFIP March of Dimes dollars, the immediate usefulness of the post-vaccine Jonas Salk was to break down a local "real covenant" in La Jolla against property ownership by Jews and create a very exclusive environment for the collaboration of Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the University of California. UC was the longstanding contract-holding manager of Los Alamos, and up in the Bay area its teaching hospital was the world's busiest polio center, San Francisco Children's Hospital (today called the California Pacific Medical Center). At the urging of his friend J. Robert Oppenheimer, Salk was staked out on the most prime of prime real estate in southern Cal where the Salk building gleamed like "the modern equivalent of a temple of Zeus beside the Aegean", designed by architect Louis Kahn. (p.270 Oshinsky). The opportunity for Jonas Salk signaled a major change in his personal life. He divorced his wife, married a French painter, and began living out the dream of his Faustian deal, but Salk was a compromised man. David Oshinsky informs us of an episode that occurred as the contaminated "Cutter fiasco" vaccine story of the IPV unfolded. Salk was approached with a warning about the Cutter Lab crisis by another researcher, Julius Youngner, who told him "that the people at Cutter didn't know what they were doing". Youngner offered to write to the NIH and Basil O'Connor. Salk suggested it was better if he himself sent the letter, but Youngner reported, "I was completely taken in...Jonas had probably done nothing". Truth or fiction, Salk was evermore reluctant to recount his vaccine history for the record, refusing to engage future journalists taking up the "human experiment" angle. Counting on time to heal all wounds perhaps, even Cutter came out well, enfolded into the Bayer/Farben cartel of the 1970s. Most intriguing were the superstar Cold Warriors that came to dominate the Salk Institute infrastructure. Chairman of the Board was the very "Chairman of the American Establishment" himself, John J. McCloy, (JPMorgan lawyer, Governor of occupied Germany and president of the World Bank) who built his early law career prosecuting the Black Tom Island case. Mathematician Warren Weaver and physicist Leo Szilard served as the eyes and ears of Lewis L. Strauss, former AEC chief, who had busied himself in the medical arena of cancer. Harry M. Weaver, who sat atop the NFIP March of Dimes also turned his sights to cancer with the same zeal to produce a vaccine for the American Cancer Society, Inc. Other utopian Zionists like Jacob Bronowski flocked to the Salk Institute where they exercised their form of high arts, "fine art" and not so fine. The Bronowski's were notorious for raucous and debauched late-night partying among their disapproving neighbors. The fame of Jonas Salk, the caliber of Cold Warriors, industry moguls, and top-tier research staff under the collaborative and private umbrella that became the Salk Institute put a lot of apples in the basket of bioweapons. Genetics, cancer, and AIDS took precedence at the Salk, AIDS due in part to the death of Salk's president and spiritual mentor from AIDS, Frederic de Hoffman. De Hoffman was Edward Teller's assistant in H-bomb development, and had been applying himself to commercial nuclear power since 1955, then making an "unusual career switch into biology" in 1970 to become the president of the Salk Institute. (5). If there was much doubt about the greater objectives of "operation polio", or public health research in general, individuals like McCloy and de Hoffman assuage such doubt by their presence in the center at the helm. David Bodian, contemporary with Salk and Sabin, proved that in every case of polio, encephalitis (brain infection) was present. Albert Sabin, who carried the polio torch for Simon Flexner, stood firmly on the same ground as Flexner that a vaccine would be forthcoming as soon as the viral agent was properly identified. Sabin's colleagues used the same language to describe him as did Flexner's --"mean and ruthless". In a toss of the two-sided coin, Oshinsky describes Sabin and Salk as polar opposites. Salk was humanly warm and humble-appearing but dismissed intellectually by his peers, while Sabin was abrasive and disliked but scientifically endorsed as exceptional. The easy Sabin liquid OPV was distributed around the world (in sugar and candy) and replaced Salk's IPV on the basis of unmonitored word-of-mouth supported inoculations done in the Soviet Union. The Soviets had their own explosion of polio in the mid-50s, calling out for the expertise of Albert Sabin, a native Russian who lived there until the age of 15 but spoke no Russian. The Defense Dept. was alarmed enough to send out warnings about the bioweapons capability of poliovirus, although the current spin is that polio is useless for that purpose. Shortly before the Sabin vaccine got its international licensing approval in 1961, a hugely emotional conference with Soviet participation worked its PR magic in overlooking the unevaluated results, even though vaccine-contamination had been as much an issue with the OPV. Sabin's co-hort, Dorothy Horstmann of Yale, went to Russia in an attempt to assess the results of the OPV, but all of her work there was hopelessly inconclusive and unfinished. Horstmann herself had earlier conducted a polio study in New Haven, finding only one case of "viral" polio in 111 polio patients. Sabin went on to build up his own vaccine empire, consolidated near the time of his death in 1993 as the Sabin Vaccine Institute, which is a clearinghouse for pharmaceutical development today. H.R. Shepherd, the Sabin Vaccine Institute's founding chairman and president is the world expert on aerosol inoculation and author of "Aerosols: Science and Technology". In 1970, Albert Sabin became president of Israel's Weizmann Institute, a position initially attained by presidents of the Israeli nation. The national prestige garnered by both Salk and Sabin, their common and lifelong military roots, kept them in each other's orbits and the public eye for the term of their lives. Both men served as pro-vaccine advisors to Gerald Ford during the impending and inflated swine-flu threat of 1976, when millions of Americans were vaccinated, and many like "Ray" from Massachusetts took on permanent disabilities from vaccine. As the evidence accumulates, poliovirus looks more and more like THE bioweapon of the century, companion in every respect to nuclear development. In fact it is a most perfect bioweapon to weed and weaken a population over time. It is simple enough to become, as of 2002, the first ever virus to be assembled in a lab completely from scratch. (6). The poliovirus is the premier gene-therapy agent because of its noted remarkable ability of infectiousness. The polio continuum appears to be the most "special project" of the bioweapons-medical industry and looks chronologically something like this: POLIO to INFLUENZA to CANCER to AIDS, all bracketed by GENETIC manipulation. Along the way, innumerable crimes have been committed and continue to be so. Contaminated polio vaccines have been spread far and wide, beginning with the first vaccines containing SV40 (SIV) simian immunodeficiency viruses to contemporary concoctions that no one yet has explained, such as how Monsanto's rBGH became an ingredient in a number of large batches sent to the Philippines and elsewhere in 1993. The result of this crime is permanent sterility for millions of women survivors. It required the intervention of the Philippine Supreme Court to have the vaccinations stopped. On February 18 of 2003, one month exactly before the Iraqi invasion, a U.N. military-style polio vaccine invasion descended upon 5 million of Iraq's children. 14,000 healthworkers were needed to pull off this operation in 5 days. Slow-motion genocide for Iraq's next generation is being fulfilled with the spread of radioactive DU and the continuing stress of hunger, deprivation, and grief. Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are in the crosshairs of the W.H.O. for resisting vaccination and being "undervaccinated" (the standard ploy), the subject of many prominent news magazine articles, as in Time magazine. While the journalistic re-decorators of the historical landscape are giving an epidemic make-over to the Spanish Flu and Polio, infusing them with an aura of ancient pedigrees, there is no evidence that similar diseases of the past are in any way the diseases of today. Poliovirus, in particular, has no traceable origin beyond modern laboratories and it was never known to occur in epidemics. The diseases known as "polio-like" are attributable to other viruses and poisons, and that list of disorders is long. Very long. The three scientists at the fore of polio research and discovery --Flexner, Sabin, and Salk-- were experts on the "other viruses"; meningitis, encephalitis, and influenza respectively. An overview of polio history is presented by the online journal The Ecologist (7), especially the continuum aspects of cancer-causing polio vaccines, but the subject of radiation goes untouched. A statement made in a PBS "American Experience" documentary (8) explains a "good bioweapon" as one that will drain the resources of an army --a sick soldier consuming time, expense, and the necessary help of several others. To this researcher, it's the significant moment of the film. Framed from this point of view, the modern approach to health "maintenance" and elder care (most often called "chronic care"), fits this resource-draining objective. Americans are familiar with the grim and hollow statistics of having the most expensive medical care with the least effective outcomes. Whether or not there is intention to push the public mind to clamor for socialized medicine, the fundamental medical controversies themselves do not see the light of day, buried even deeper under the weight of cumulative history and technical jargon. An even better "good bioweapon" is one that mimics or obscures other causes and masks its origin, a quintessential quality of poliovirus. We are frightfully brainwashed into assisting our own demise. War on germs is war upon ourselves. In Arno Karlen's book "Man and Microbes" he makes two large points: (1) the development of grain-based, domesticated agriculture has diminished the human species for millennia in both physical size and vitality and (2) in spite of it, through centuries of behavioral changes, migrations, and co-habitation with animals, we had attained an evolutionary tolerance with microbes that was stabilizing before the dawn of the 20th century. Statistically, the epidemic diseases of our nearest ancestors were in rapid decline before the days of Pasteur and Koch, Karlen tells us. A similar decline in polio's then hundred-plus year history had begun before the 1950s vaccines according to www.vaclib.org and other vaccine information sites, but none of this was made public or provided to general health professionals. What we do know now is cached in the opening statements of Arno Karlen's first chapter, written "An alarming tide of new and resurgent diseases has been rising around the world for decades. Now it advances faster than ever. This signals a crisis in the history of the human species. We have brought it on by rending the fabric of our environment...We have been slow to understand that we live in a new biocultural era". Jonas Salk had a concept for us to consider. He called it "metabiology" --an abstraction perhaps, full of potential on a chemically altered planet, but realism suggests that more basic biology would do us good. The world we still live in continues to come up short on the basics. Unfortunately, Karlen and other writers echo the standard epidemiological line and encourage vaccinations, all commenting on the crisis of emerging disease since the 50s, but none of these "library book" authors are penetrating the mystery or investigating the relationship of nuclear development and sickness. Sources for radiation induced illness are in the available documents of the military, and strewn in fragmented pieces of information across the literature of specialists. As the food-borne chemical cause of polio invisibly gave way and shifted to a pervasive radiological cause of "acute flaccid paralysis", the open door to "other viruses" flung wide and "unknown causes" hit the ground running. Dr. Ralph Scobey wrote in 1954, "There is much evidence to indicate that the poliomyelitis virus is synthesized or activated within the human body instead of entering it as commonly assumed." In other words, the phenomena of viral infection is a natural response of the body attempting to heal itself of damage, drawing from its own source of chemistry. This is native polymorphism. Radiation exposures (X-ray and fallout) cause an untolled volume of physical damage and chemical complications from within and without. Ominous synergistically enhanced effects with radiation occur with internal chemical/viruses, allowing for "less is more" in producing a diseased condition. The global fallout of the 1950s, equal to 40,000 Hiroshima bombs, uniquely sensitized the world's population to more easily bring forth spontaneous viral creations as well as succumb to known infectious agents. Introducing pathogens into the general environment equates to the Arms Race mentality that characterizes the period --Mutually Assured Destruction, MAD! In summary, the research so far is leading a proposition and shaping new sets of questions, based in large measure on the words and actions of one of the most prominent polio researchers, Australian Frank MacFarlane Burnet. In 1947 Burnet proposed that his government develop an "intestinal agent" bioweapon that would spread easily and debilitate widely (assuming this means across the living spectrum of animals and plants, as in full economic war). He suggested a water-borne contaminant according to published sources, but Burnet would have been well in-the-know that powdered viruses were already a reality in 1947. It's not the mode of dissemination that makes his appeal interesting however. He supported his premise on the argument that Australia was sparsely populated and therefore unable to protect itself against enemy hordes and suggested initiating an active and immediate offense. (9). Would Victorian era Zionists have thought the same way? Did a grand masterplan for bioweapons exist corresponding to the Protocols that began as simply an "intestinal agent"? Proposition: The "separation" of mother and child which was effectively induced in hordes of working families by provision of pasteurized "safe milk" (and formula substitutes) reduced or erased nature's most valuable self-defense against an intestinal agent-- mother's immunity, healthy gut flora, and the fine relationship that orients a mammal to social living among its own kind. The adulteration and processing of milk itself became a bioweapon of choice and an unceasing target of despoil. The major developed and acknowledged bioweapons of our time have all been recorded in the last century as milk ingredients by the very men who make vaccines and bioweapons, including polio. Chemical farming, fumigating, and X-ray experimentation propagated illness, "natural" disease creation, and super-strain potential among adapting lifeforms. All the while, humans in greater numbers were losing their inherent protection, relying on store-bought, grain-based, nutritionally inferior foods increasingly controlled within Zionist dominated markets. Notorious commercial food practices have not been addressed in this article series, but the current state of quality should suffice as an indicator. Several decades of these practices ripened the world for the wartime pandemic "Grippe Espagnole" of 1918--the H1N1 flu of flus, suspiciously lethal and political-- with a paralysis/polio component, as are all acute epidemics. A great deal of genetic material was brought into the bio-labs under the flags of war and shielded from scrutiny. From this time forward, great emphasis was given to cancer research, the transmissible nature of cancers, and radiological experimentation. In 1935, Wendell Stanley crystallized the tobacco mosaic virus, enabling it to become a stable powder, and the research fellowship set to work on other viruses. Stanley announced in 1954 from his home institution at the UCBerkeley Virus Laboratory that the poliovirus had become the first human virus to be crystallized, highlighting again another First for the uncomplicated polio virus, no more complicated than the tobacco mosaic virus crystallized 20 years earlier. (10). In retrospect, if powdered polio was made public knowledge at that time, it's a strange bit of news for the mid-fifties. But no stranger than atomizing an island in front of the world's news journalists, as was done during Operation Crossroads. By the mid-fifties, polio was indisputably "intestinal", a ready aerosol, and able to grow in nearly every kind of human tissue. Today it's our viral Frankenstein, and now that it's been resurrected as a nip-and-tuck monster, we must rededicate ourselves into the future with vaccine protection in case bioterrorists tamper with it!! As long as biologically disruptive high-energy weapons and tools remain on the scene and in use, homeostasis is improbable as new pathogens emerge far faster than our ability to adapt. Synthetic and radioresistant biomachinery, a new magic bullet, is just around the corner --witness the synthetic antibody developments at Semorex, Inc. As ever --yay or nay decisions on who gets the medicine (antidote) and who does not reflects a Faustian choice. In the midst of the U.S. polio vaccine trials and epidemics, this was the compelling drama written about by Dr. Shelton. People were frantic for the real medicine. It's Life or death hinging on someone else's fame and fortune. The depth of the devilry is to have a world demanding the means of its own destruction. ============ The following line items contain statements from a military radiation-studies report (11) in "quotes", prepared for a nuclear battlefield, and compared to known symptoms, signs, effects and warnings of polio [in brackets]. The relevance of this lengthy document highlights the shifting diagnostic criteria of polio as it evolved over time to correspond with radiation illness, from the early use of X-rays (1896 onwards) to massive irradiation from fallout, and offered as a finale: ___ "It has been known for some time that paralysis of the hind limbs of animals can result from localized irradiation of the spinal cord. Rabbits developed this paralysis at 4 to 33 weeks after exposure of the upper thoracic region...As in other model systems, the time interval between irradiation and...neurological symptoms decreases as dose increases. For example, 50 Gy of X-rays to the monkey midthoracic spinal cord produced immediate paraplegia, whereas 40 Gy was (paralytic) only after a latent period of about 5.5 months [this is self-evident for paralytic polio given early X-ray treatment of any and all disorders at unregulated dosages]. ___ "Naturalistic Behaviors...evaluated in the study of radiation effects are spontaneous locomotion, social interaction,...consumption behaviors (eating and drinking), taste aversions and emesis (vomiting)"..."Activity is of interest because radiation is known to produce malaise, along with other prodomal symptoms (early symptoms in disease onset) of general weakness, fatigue, headache, nausea, anorexia, vomiting, hemorrhage, and drowsiness or insomnia"..."expected radiogenic symptoms include gastrointestinal distress, fatigability, weakness, hypotension, infection, bleeding, fever, fluid loss, and electrolyte imbalance" [this is the classic characterization of signs in onset polio minus a specifically stated stiff neck, which was not communicated as a symptom by the lab animals in the studies]. ___ "The phenomena of latent CNS (central nervous system) radiation damage...has been well documented...speculation on the likely pathogenesis of late radiation lesions (reveals) (a)radiation may act primarily on the vascular system...(b)radiation may have a primary effect on cells of the neural parenchyma (the nerve tissue)"..."evidence in support of a vascular hypothesis was obtained when human brains that had been exposed to X-rays were examined...Delayed damage of capillary...cells may occur, leading to a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier. This would result in vasogenic edema (swelling and pressure)...and eventually neuronal and myelin degeneration...(H)ypertension accelerates the appearance of vascular lesions in the brain after irradiation." [demonstrates polio in the absence of detectable virus and relates the polio-like "demyelinating" illnesses of multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's]. ___ "A review of many standard radiobiology textbooks reveals the common belief that the adult nervous system is relatively resistant to damage from ionizing radiation exposure...however, this view has been eroded when it was later shown that the latency period for...radiation damage...is simply longer than it is in other organ systems." [this reinforces the notion of polio as a children's disease and explains why adult polio was likely to go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, often as flu, food poisoning, or mental illness, and explains the noted "dormancy" of poliovirus]. ___ "In addition to axonal demyelination, other direct neuronal damage may occur in the irradiated adult...mitotic neurons of the prenatal or neonatal CNS are known to be extremely sensitive to radiation" [adds the axon-damage diseases like GBS to polio's roster and shows a continuing "infantile paralysis" shifting to a radiation cause]. ___ "(C)hanges in brain metabolism were reported after very low doses of ionizing radiation...lower rates of glucose use were found...Changes in food preferences have also occurred after irradiation. Monkeys chose apples and carrots more frequently and peanuts less often after exposure." [this is common in the personal stories of polio survivors who were described as "never the same" and even with changed personalities]. ___ ..."the mouth, throat, and stomach are highly sensitive to abrasion after irradiation" [the alimentary tract was identified as the entry portal of poliovirus, and tonsillectomies, commonplace after 1910, were/are considered directly causal in polio infection]. ___ "(P)hysical exertion associated with the movement of large striated muscles...revealed chronic deterioration of motor performance...long-term (42 week) progressive deterioration...occurred"..."A rat's swimming to exhaustion before and after irradiation will significantly...lower the LD50 (lethal dose to 50%). Rats that swam to just short of exhaustion before irradiation showed increased radioresistance and a higher LD50...(and) recovered from radiation effects sooner." [Mothers were urged to keep their kids calm and not allow children to play too hard physically]. ___ "Although radiation caused a ...decrease in monkey activity and appetite...task performance was actually enhanced...when a premium was placed on paying attention...literature suggests that learning and performance are rather radioresistant, (but) most studies have reported postirradiation deficits...often these decrements were still found if the animals were tested months or years later."
